The air-cooled Roots vacuum pump is an enhanced version of the ordinary Roots vacuum pump, featuring an additional bypass gas cooling system. The external cooler enables the gas to automatically undergo cyclic cooling of the rotor and the pump body. It can operate continuously under high pressure differences.

The Roots vacuum pump has a high pumping rate at lower inlet pressures, but it cannot be used alone. It can be combined with a liquid ring pump to form a unit to provide a higher vacuum.
